چکیده

The details are presented of a new evolution algorithm for the characteristic initial-boundary value problem based upon an affine parameter rather than the areal radial coordinate used in the BondiSachs formulation. The advantages over the Bondi-Sachs version are discussed, with particular emphasis on the application to the characteristic extraction of the gravitational waveform from Cauchy simulations of general relativistic astrophysical systems.

In this paper we propose a new geometric interpretation for General Relativity (GR). It has always been presumed that the gravitational field is described in GR by a Levi-Civita connection. We suggest that this may not necessarily be the case. We show that in the presence of an arbitrary affine connection, the gravitational field is described as nonmetricity of the affine connection. An affine ...

Null Cones and Einstein’s Equations in Minkowski Spacetime

If Einstein’s equations are to describe a field theory of gravity in Minkowski spacetime, then causality requires that the effective curved metric must respect the flat background metric’s null cone. The kinematical problem is solved using a generalized eigenvector formalism based on the Segré classification of symmetric rank 2 tensors with respect to a Lorentzian metric. Securing the correct r...

When is gtt grr = −1?

The Schwarzschild metric, its Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter generalizations to higher dimensions, and some further generalizations all share the feature that gtt grr = −1 in Schwarzschild-like coordinates. In this pedagogical note we trace this feature to the condition that the Ricci tensor (and stress-energy tensor in a solution to Einstein’s equation) has vanishing radial null-null component, ...

Universal Field Equations for Metric–affine Theories of Gravity

We show that almost all metric–affine theories of gravity yield Einstein equations with a non–null cosmological constant Λ. Under certain circumstances and for any dimension, it is also possible to incorporate a Weyl vector field Wμ and therefore the presence of an anisotropy. The viability of these field equations is discussed in view of recent astrophysical observations.
